Monday morning is here and the start to a new week, but WOW what a week last week was! I was lucky enough to spend it road-tripping through Texas with two of my favourite people. We went to some awesome places, saw some brilliant things, ate some delicious (and healthy) food and whiled away hours soaking up the sunshine and putting the world to rights. With inspiration coming at me from all angles my fingers are bubbling over with reflections I'm dying to share. I could write about the cool box filled with healthy snacks to demonstrate how a little bit of planning helps avoid those roadway pitfalls (blog post coming soon). I could write about how ridiculous we all looked doing a legs work-out in the hotel room, because 'no gym' is just not a good enough excuse to not exercise. I could admit that travelling through this vast country has made me challenge my prejudices, evaluate my appreciation of different people, places, cultures, and be more accepting of myself and of others. More than anything though, this trip has reinforced something so important. Such a simple concept, so powerful, but far too often misunderstood, undervalued or ignored...
Surround yourself with people who lift you up and encourage you to shine.
Choose to spend your time with people who inspire you, and empower you to be, see and achieve everything you dream of.
Sometimes you may feel like you have little choice in who you spend your time with - friendship groups and relationships may be long established, habitual social engagements may have been formed, FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) means you say "yes" regardless of the crowd, and quite frankly, branching out is scary! But taking stock of the people you spend your time with is so important. Do they lift you up? Are you left smiling, motivated, positive and excited about life and the adventures to come? Are you having fun?
After a few days with Camilla and Graham I am super-charged and raring to go. They inspire me, support and encourage me, let alone have me laughing most of the day. They accept me and my nuances (and encourage me to do the same) whilst pushing me on the journey to being the best 'me' I can be. They also know to feed me when I get cranky - thank god!
It's not always that easy. Sometimes our dreams, desires and choices will be so different to those of friends and family, their reaction can be discouraging and damaging to our self-belief, focus and goals. Don't hold it against them, realise that we're all different with different aspirations and hold true to yourself. I once heard someone say "Never dilute yourself and your dreams to make others feel more comfortable.", and it's a mantra I try to live by.
Also remember that negativity often breeds negativity. Lethargy often breeds lethargy. Some people will drag you down to lift themselves up; hold you back out of fear of being left behind; dampen your dreams to cushion their reality. So align yourself with people who lift you up and encourage you on your journey. These are the people to prioritise your time with. These are the people to surround yourself with. You deserve it and you owe it to yourself. So choose your surroundings, and choose them wisely.
Now y'all go on and have a great week! ;-)
