Despite the misleading title, and my being on the cusp of another international move, I am not here today to encourage you to brave a new adventure overseas.
Actually, I’m here to share the most consistent message I teach my clients;
BE AN EXPLORER.
I use this analogy across so many paradigms - from exercise habits to food to relationships to delving into the quandaries of our minds.
Today, we are talking body health.
Too often, we assume what is ‘good’ for us, yet never have we actually every put it to the test or under the microscope. (Perhaps I should switch ‘explorer’ to ‘scientist’?!)
So, today, I am here to encourage you, that rather than assuming or accepting external messaging that something is the right way to do things, how about you just GO AND EXLORE IT FOR YOURSELF.
At what time of day do you most enjoy and feel energised by exercise?
Which activities light you up?
What type of foods fuel you with heaps of energy?
What routines at bedtime genuinely help you create a better night’s sleep for yourself?
Instead of assuming that there is one right way, go and find your way.
Go and try different things, experiment, observe how it makes you feel and collect evidence that reliably informs you if this behaviour is something that works FOR YOU. Evidence that is relative to YOUR experience, not somebody else’s.
Too often sweeping generalisations about health and fitness can leave us feeling inadequate. If we’re not diving in the new craze of yoga or HIIT workouts or zero-carb-gluten-free-vegan-fasted-woo-woo diets, then we’re never going to achieve a beautiful healthy body we love.
The way to health is paved with consistency (of simple healthy behaviours). Just to clarify, I’m talking about a consistency that lasts, comes with kindness (not a militant bullying into action) and ultimately feels more like habit than enforced regimen.
The way to consistency is paved by your mindset AND awareness. Stop judging things as good/bad/right/wrong/better/worse and become an explorer who assumes nothing but is willing to try things and observe. Pay attention to the feedback you get - did you enjoy it? Are you left feeling good and satisfied or needing more? How does your body respond?
Become an observant explorer who’s mission is to slowly collect evidence about what does and doesn’t work for you. Discover what fills your life with the joy, calm, vibrant energy and healthy body that you so deserve and long for.
Have you ever considered that the reason that diet / that gym routine never lasts beyond the first two weeks of momentum is not because you’re lazy or have no will power but perhaps because it’s just not your thing? Or the set up isn’t quite right for you?
We are ALL SO DIFFERENT.
So go and explore and find YOUR way.
Me - it’s no secret that I love yoga. My body feels great after it. My headspace feels calmer, kinder and more connected.
You? You may not. And that is more than ok - it may leave you achey, tired and restless.
This means nothing about what you’re capable of achieving for yourself, your health and your life, it’s just not your thing.
I love eating green smoothies for breakfast - it sustains me energetically and feels like I’ve got the ‘healthy food’ thing covered. Carbs at breakfast make me crash, hard. You may be the total opposite.
I know these things about myself because I have EXPLORED. I have tried various ways of moving through my days and paid attention to what feels good, tops me up, enables me to give back, and what does less so.
If those results are different to the “should”s (fads) of the time, that’s fine by me. This is my way, not theirs.
Then, and here is the crux of it, after collecting that evidence, I INTEGRATE it. I pull that knowledge forward with me and honour that self-awareness with action - recognising how much easier that is when the choice is so aligned with my personality, my life, my needs and my joy.
So give yourself a break. Let go of the ‘should’s and explore a more personalised path to your best, healthy, vibrant life!
P.S. If you already KNOW what works for you, you’re fully aware of what makes you feel great, but you’re just not making it happen, I’m here to help. If the consistency I speak of above is just a marvel and mystery to you, trust me, it’s not that you can’t do it, it’s just that something (or someone) is standing in your way.
